New Exciting Features Coming to XL-DBQuery Soon!

I know it's been a long time since I have updated this blog, but we have been busy adding a couple of exciting new features to the next addition of XL-DBQuery - 'Version 1.5'

Firstly - Although XL-DBQuery is very easy to use (even for novice users), based on customer feedback, you thought that complex queries were sometimes a little difficult to decipher from the SQL syntax. That's why we have added a new feature to v1.5, that we have named the 'Query Tree View'. The 'Query Tree View' breaks down the query into hierarchical tree, as the name suggests. The tree view is broken down into the various query elements starting with the selected tables and for each table broken down again to show the selected fields. If a field has query criteria, this is displayed under the applicable field. Groups, Orders and Calculated Fields are also shown. All in all this has the effect of making the query a lot more visual and easy to understand. We believe that the Query Tree View feature should appeal to users at all levels.

I have included a screen shot of the new feature below, so that you can see what I am talking about. Please let me know if you have any comments.

Secondly - We have added a the facility to export query results as a CSV text file. This has various advantages. Firstly, it allows you to take data from different sources, for example Oracle and Access and convert both sources into a common format (CSV). You can then use XL-DBQuery to connect to the CSV files and perform joins against both sources based on a common field and merge the results from both CSV files together. Secondly, it allows you to export the query results into a standardized format that can easily be imported into a majority of popular databases and spreadsheets.

We plan to extend the export feature to include Microsoft Access if there is sufficient demand. Again, please let me know if you feel that this would be useful.

Bye for now!

LATEST NEWS - XL-DBQuery Version 1.1 Is Now Available !!

Hi everyone,

We have finally released XL-DBQuery Version 1.1 which includes the new query parameter feature that allows users to dynamically update query criteria values from Excel. I would just like to say a big thank you for everyone’s patience over this release, Vista proved to be a little bit more tricky than anticipated and this ultimately led to a slight delay in our original Mar release date.

A 15 day trial is available via our site @ www.xl-dbquery.com/downloads/xl-dbqueryv1.zip

For those interested, here is a brief list of Version 1.1 new features and tweaks:-

- New feature added to XL-DBQuery that allows users to create parameter queries that can be dynamically updated from Excel. (Requires ODBC connection)

- New Save/Save As Data Source library file feature added.
- New feature added that allows users to return query results to Excel without needing to run and preview the query first.

- Query builder load speed has been improved when connecting to Data Sources containing large numbers of tables and fields.

- Improved data source connection wizard to easily connect & query Microsoft Excel and Access - General improvements to overall look and feel.

- Fully compatible with Microsoft Office 2007.

- Fully compatible with Windows Vista O/S.

- Existing customers can upgrade to Version 1.1 for free.

New Feature added to XL-DBQuery - Add Parameters to your queries

Hi all,

Just to let you know that the next version of XL-DBQuery (Version 1.1) will include a new feature that will allow users to add parameters to their queries that can be automatically updated from an Excel Sheet. We are very excited about this new feature and it should provide customers with even greater flexibility. It's a lot easier and more intuitive to use than MS Query's parameter feature and also benefits from XL-DBQuery's assumption functionality.

We should have a beta available at the end of Feb, so just let me know if you would be interested in taking it for a test drive!

XL-DBQuery Vista Compatibility

Hi everyone!

Sorry for the late blog, but we have been busy changing XL-DBQuery to be compatible with Microsoft's new Vista Operating system. If you are a developer of commercial software you will probably already know that this is no easy task. Anyway, the new Vista compatible version of XL-DBQuery will be available late Feb/early March 07. In addition we will also be including the ability to create parameters, which has been the number one requested item by our customers.

If you have any questions regarding the new version of XL-DBQuery, feel free to blog me!

I haven't forgotten my promise to start including some useful Excel hints/tips & vba code samples and I will be endeavouring to live up to my promise over the next couple of days.
